Barrow Town Youth Football Club held its 19th annual tournament on Saturday 9th of May at Riverside Park Sports Ground.

With over 100 teams from under 7's to under 14's a good time was had by all. Although the older age groups were competitive the atmosphere throughout the day was relaxed with plenty of smiling faces on show.

Nearly 1000 players enjoyed the competition, cheered on by very enthusiastic spectators, young and old alike. Certainly all enjoyed the good weather, and even sun tan lotion was needed by some as sunny spells in the morning turned into a very sunny and warm afternoon!

Football scouts from Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa mingled amongst the crowds and weren’t left disappointed as the standard of football on show was really high.

All players in the U7 – U9 age groups received medals. These, together with the winner and runner up trophies, were presented by Barrow Town Youth FC’s President Gilbert Napthine. Gilbert, who was recently honoured for his volunteer work in grassroots football at a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace hosted by HRH Prince William The Duke of Cambridge, commented “It’s really wonderful to see many familiar and new faces this year at the Barrow Town Youth FC tournament. We strive to improve our tournament every year to provide one of the best celebrations of football in the county. We have received numerous comments regarding how well the tournament is organised reflected in the amount of teams that come back year after year. It’s testament not only to the BTYFC committee for it’s hard work and commitment to host the event every year, but also to all who attend and make it such a fantastic calendar must!”.

A special mention goes out to all the volunteers who helped make the day a success and also to the teams from across the county who participated.

Barrow Town Youth FC are already looking forward to the 20th anniversary next year and hope to see many of their footballing friends again.
